Briefing

Smart was (and is) the perfect city car. Small. Agile. Easy to park. But in consumers’ minds, it competed against bigger cars. SUVs, families, off-roaders dominated advertising space and seemed advantaged by volume alone. The challenge: prove small size wasn’t a disadvantage—it was a superpower.

Idea

Play with the medium itself. We didn’t need to say Smart was small. We had to demonstrate it physically using street space.

We placed smart billboards next to other brands’ larger car ads. Our billboard showed multiple Smarts arranged like a puzzle, filling every available centimeter. The neighbor billboard showed one big car taking up all the space.

The headline was obvious: “On the billboard next door, only one fits.”

Honest. Visual. Impossible to ignore. And brutally economical—we didn’t need to invent a metaphor. The medium was the message.

Execution

Strategic outdoor billboards placed next to competitor car ads showing bigger vehicles. Multiple Smarts in various colors and angles organized in perfect puzzle formation, no wasted space. Black band with white typography, centered, no decoration. Just enough for immediate understanding: Smart is small. Smart fits where others don’t. Smart is smart.
